Lepa-Lepa Experience

Lepa-Lepa ExperienceIt looks like a basket of fruits floating along a river. Decorated with bright vibrant colours, the Lepa-Lepa (which literally means boat) would bring you cruising along the Tambalang River, where locals depend on for their daily life.

The Lepa-Lepa was exclusively transported from its place of origin, Semporna, to Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort, Tuaran, just for you.

Semporna is located on the northern part of Sabah, some 570 kilometres from Kota Kinabalu City. Semporna (which literally means ‘perfect’), takes about 12 hours drive by road or alternatively about 45 minutes fly from the Kota Kinabalu City to the Tawau International Airport and another two hours drive to the district. Back home outsiders are not allowed to go on board the Lepa-Lepa.

But you may have your chance right here at the Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort. The Lepa-Lepa, which literally means ‘boat’, is actually home to the Bajau Laut community, one of the many ethnics in Sabah. It is where the community would raise their family and carry out their daily chores - cook, eat and sleep. However, due to modernisation, some have shifted to live along the coasts, perched on stilts over shallow reef, while they continue their love affair with the sea.Sea Gypsy House

Lepa-Lepa is believed to have originated from the fishing community that lived on the islands along the east coast of Semporna. The tradition however lives on for the Bajau Lauts and their love for the Lepa-Lepa continues as annually a special programme, dubbed the Regatta Lepa Lepa would be organised usually in mid April.

The Lepa-Lepa would be beautified with colourful decorations, while musicians play the traditional songs to accompany beautiful local girls, all dressed in colourful traditional costumes, dancing to entertain spectators. In short, the regatta is an opportunity for them to proudly show-off their Lepa-Lepas, which culminates in the choosing of the most beautiful Lepa-Lepa.
